Scalable Capital vs DEGIRO (2026):
Full Comparison for EU Investors

Investing involves risk of loss. This is not investment advice. Currency fluctuations can impact your returns. DEGIRO is an execution-only broker and does not provide investment advice. The Scalable Capital Broker is likewise execution-only; Scalable separately operates Wealth, a discretionary managed product, which is not covered on this page.

Scalable Capital’s fee schedule changed on 1 September 2026, and it changed the answer to this comparison. Every individual order now costs €1.99 on Xetra and gettex, on the free plan and the paid one alike. DEGIRO charges €1.00 all-in on more than 1,000 Core Selection products on Tradegate — €0.00 commission plus the €1.00 handling fee — on purchases and sales alike. Currency or external product and spread costs may apply. On manual orders DEGIRO is now cheaper at every trade frequency, on either Scalable plan, with no crossover point. What Scalable still has, and DEGIRO does not offer at all, is recurring investing: savings plans from €1 at €0.00 per execution, with fractional shares. That is the comparison now — one broker for automated buying, one for everything you place by hand. Figures verified September 2026.

Pricing reflects Scalable Capital’s fee schedule effective 1 September 2026 and DEGIRO’s fee schedules with rates from 01-01-2026.

Full fee comparison

Scalable prices the Broker in a contract that sets ceilings and a fee page that publishes today’s price. Where the contract reads “up to”, that is a maximum rather than a quote; on the September schedule the published price sits at the ceiling for ETFs and shares, so the two now agree. DEGIRO publishes a single standing schedule per country. Check both providers’ current documents before acting.

Fee Scalable Capital DEGIRO
Plan fee €0.00/month (FREE) · €4.99/month (PRIME+, billed monthly in advance) €0.00/month — transaction, handling, currency, connectivity and external product and spread costs may apply
Individual order — ETFs, shares, ETCs and other ETPs €1.99 on Xetra and gettex, identical on both plans. The contract states this as a ceiling of “up to €1.99”; the published price is the ceiling.
ETF, ETC or ETN on Tradegate (Core Selection) €1.00 all-in (€0.00 commission + €1.00 handling) — currency or external product and spread costs may apply
ETF on other exchanges €3.00 (€2.00 commission + €1.00 handling)
Savings plan execution and automatic reinvestment €0.00 on both plans, from €1 — crypto ETPs additionally carry a spread surcharge of 0.99% (FREE) or 0.69% (PRIME+) Not offered
Bonds, individual order €1.99 on Xetra and gettex plus a spread surcharge of up to 5% — bonds are the only class the contract prices firm rather than as a ceiling €2.00 + €1.00 handling on the Dutch, French and Irish schedules; €3.90 + €1.00 on the German one
Funds (excluding ETFs and ELTIFs) €1.99 on Xetra and gettex plus a fund surcharge of up to 5% on every leg, including savings plan executions €3.90 per order plus a 0.20% p.a. service fee on the Dutch, French and Irish schedules; €7.50 per order plus the same 0.20% p.a. on the German one
Deposits Bank transfer and direct debit €0.00 · Instant 0.99% (FREE) or 0.69% (PRIME+) on the first €5,000, each further euro free Bank transfer in and out free
Securities transfer (in or out) €0.00 plus any third-party costs incurred €20.00 per position + external costs on the Dutch, French, Irish and Swiss schedules; the German schedule prices it at nothing
Currency conversion Converted at the applicable buying or selling rate plus a surcharge or minus a discount. The size of that surcharge is not published anywhere, and the conversion may be carried out by Scalable or by a third party such as an intermediary custodian. 0.25% AutoFX; manual conversion €10.00 + 0.25%
Exchange connectivity fee No venue or connectivity charge appears anywhere in the contractual fee schedule €2.50 per exchange per calendar year, capped at 0.25% of total account value — the client pays the lower. Core Selection products are exempt; other exemptions differ by country schedule.
Safekeeping fee on cash balances A contractual line item, with the rate published on Scalable’s website or apps. No rate is stated on any Scalable page we were able to read, so treat this as unquantified rather than nil. Not charged
Interest on credit balances A contractual line item, variable, with the rate on Scalable’s website or apps. The fee page states 0% p.a. on broker clearing cash. No credit interest rate is published on any DEGIRO fee schedule
Overnight savings account p.a. 2.60% (variable), same on both plans — you have to move money into the account to earn it Not offered
Debit interest Variable, charged quarterly; the contract publishes no rate and the fee page gives 4.49% (FREE) and 3.49% (PRIME+) on a facility of up to €250,000 6.25% p.a. unallocated EUR; 4.75% p.a. allocated EUR
Minimum savings plan amount €1

The September change removed Scalable’s price argument on manual orders. Both Scalable plans now pay €1.99 per individual order on both venues Scalable publishes a price for, which is €0.99 more than DEGIRO’s €1.00 all-in on over 1,000 Core Selection products — and DEGIRO charges the same on a sale as on a purchase. Because the two Scalable plans price orders identically, the €4.99 monthly fee buys no order-cost advantage and there is no trade count at which it pays for itself. Currency or external product and spread costs may apply.

A third plan exists in the contract and nowhere else

Scalable’s fee page and its in-app plan switcher both offer two plans: FREE and PRIME+. The binding client documents price three. PRIME sits between them at €2.99 per month, or €35.88 per year billed annually in advance, and the contract prices it in full in every row of the schedule. It appears on neither of Scalable’s two customer-facing plan surfaces, and no Scalable source states whether it is still open, whether existing holders keep it, or who may hold it. Treat it as a plan an existing customer may hold rather than one you can select when opening an account today. If it is held and paid annually in advance, the unexpired part is refunded pro rata on a 365-day year when you switch or cancel — but only on written request. None of this changes the comparison, because PRIME pays the same €1.99 per order as the other two.

Worked example: €500 a month, by hand and on a plan

A mainstream UCITS ETF bought twelve times at €500, comparing execution cost only. The second row adds four sales in the same year, because a buy-only comparison hides nothing here — both brokers charge the same on both legs. The third row is the same €500 a month run as a savings plan, which is the only row where the two brokers are not doing the same thing. Cash yield is excluded: Scalable’s Overnight account is a separate savings product rather than brokerage cash, so the two are not like-for-like.

Profile Scalable FREE Scalable PRIME+ DEGIRO Core Selection
12 purchases, no sales €23.88 €83.76 €12.00
12 purchases + 4 sales €31.84 €91.72 €16.00
Same €500 a month as a savings plan €0.00 €0.00 Not offered

The first two rows are DEGIRO’s, and they are not close: €1.00 against €1.99 on every order, with the PRIME+ subscription adding €59.88 a year on top of an order price it does not reduce. The third row is Scalable’s, and DEGIRO has nothing to put in it — no recurring order type exists, so the same €500 a month is twelve manual Core Selection orders at €12.00 a year, and without fractional shares the remainder of each €500 stays as cash rather than being invested. Neither result is a verdict on its own; which row describes you is the whole question. Currency or external product and spread costs may apply. Recurring investing and fractional shares

This is now the whole case for Scalable, and it is the one thing most fee tables leave out. Savings plans and fractional shares travel together: a €1 recurring purchase only works if the broker can buy part of a share.

Scalable Capital — Savings Plans
  • Recurring purchases at fixed amounts and regular intervals, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, on nine execution days
  • Minimum €1 per execution, with no maximum savings rate stated on any Scalable page
  • €0.00 per savings plan execution and per automatic reinvestment, on both plans
  • Eligible on ETFs, shares, funds and crypto ETPs. Crypto ETPs are the exception to the zero — they carry a spread surcharge of 0.99% on FREE and 0.69% on PRIME+
  • One plan per security: the number of plans is unlimited, the number per ISIN is one
  • Changes made less than five banking days before an execution take effect from the following execution instead — the same five-day figure governs funding the account and changing the payment method
  • Plans debit the broker clearing balance, reserved several days in advance, with SEPA direct debit from the reference account as the fallback if the balance is short at the moment of reservation
  • Fractions are bought to six decimal places and always rounded down, so the savings rate is never exceeded and the remainder stays in the clearing account
  • Fractional execution for savings plans and automatic reinvestment runs on the European Investor Exchange
  • Fractions cannot be bought directly, only acquired through savings plans — and an individual fraction cannot be sold on its own; the entire position has to go
  • Product costs, spreads, fund surcharges and inducements may still apply

Crypto assets are highly volatile assets. The value can fluctuate significantly. There is a risk of losing the entire invested capital.

DEGIRO — no recurring order type
  • DEGIRO’s order execution policy lists eight order types and two validity durations — day orders and good-till-cancelled — and none of them is a scheduled or recurring purchase
  • DEGIRO’s helpdesk states that it facilitates whole shares only, so fractional shares are not offered
  • A value order lets you enter an amount rather than a share count for specific assets, combined with a limit — but without fractionals the order still fills in whole units and the remainder stays as cash
  • Repeat purchases are therefore manual, and each one carries the €1.00 all-in Core Selection cost on Tradegate — currency or external product and spread costs may apply
  • Order types are described in the Dutch Branch policy document; the same set is reasonably taken to apply in other markets, but that is an inference rather than something DEGIRO states per country
How to weigh this. If you invest a fixed amount every month and never think about it again, this section decides the comparison on its own, and Scalable wins it outright — €0.00 against €12.00 a year on a €500 monthly contribution, with the whole contribution invested rather than the whole-share part of it. If you buy in larger, irregular amounts and place each order yourself, this section is worth nothing to you and the €0.99 per-order gap in DEGIRO’s favour is the number that matters. Note that Scalable’s own documents make no guarantee about savings plan timing or execution: they state that timing and execution depend on tradability and available balances and cannot be assured. Investing involves risk of loss.

What you can actually trade, and where

Wider access is only worth paying for if you intend to use it, and on DEGIRO each additional exchange carries the connectivity fee. Trading in another currency also exposes you to currency movements on both platforms.

Asset / Market Scalable Capital DEGIRO
ETFs UCITS ETFs on three German venues, at €1.99 per individual order and €0.00 inside a savings plan Over 1,000 Core Selection products at €1.00 all-in — all ETFs, ETCs and ETNs listed on Tradegate. Currency or external product and spread costs may apply.
Execution venues Category 1: European Investor Exchange. Category 2: gettex and Xetra. Scalable may also offer other venues for a specific order, and the client contractually consents to OTC execution. More than 45 markets across 30 countries, with a handling fee applied per order in addition to commission
Other instruments Shares, ETCs and other ETPs, funds, bonds, ELTIFs and derivatives. Funds, bonds and ELTIFs carry a surcharge of up to 5% on every leg; ELTIFs additionally carry a flat fee of up to 2% of net asset value per year; derivatives are priced at a contractual ceiling of up to €9.99 plus up to 0.99% spread surcharge. Shares, rights, warrants, ADRs, ETFs, ETNs and ETCs, bonds, investment funds, leveraged products and certificates
Funds without a front-end load Scalable’s marketing pages and its contractual price list say different things here. The contract prices a fund surcharge of up to 5% on every leg, and the fee page states front-end loads of €0. No Scalable source reconciles the two, so a zero-cost funds claim cannot be relied on. Investment funds via Euronext Fund Services and non-listed STP: €3.90 per order plus a 0.20% p.a. service fee on the Dutch, French and Irish schedules; €7.50 per order plus the same 0.20% p.a. on the German one
Home-market share commission Not applicable — pricing is by venue category, not by country Varies by country schedule: €1.00 Euronext Paris, €2.00 Euronext Amsterdam, Brussels and Dublin, and no reduced band in Germany, where XETRA sits in the standard €3.90 tier. Plus the €1.00 handling fee.
Availability One legal entity in Germany, operating cross-border under freedom of services into France (metropolitan France only), Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Austria. Wealth, the managed product, is available to German and Austrian clients only. Check availability for your country of residence on DEGIRO’s own site before applying

Sources: DEGIRO fee schedules for the Netherlands, Germany, France and Ireland, rates from 01-01-2026, and DEGIRO’s Core Selection page; Scalable Capital client documents, sections D and E (Stand Juli 2026) and the Scalable Capital help centre. Verified September 2026.

Country availability is a hard constraint, and it changes. Neither broker serves every EU market, and the lists move. Check your country of residence on each provider’s own site before starting an application, rather than relying on any third-party list including this one. Multi-market access on DEGIRO is priced separately: the connectivity fee is €2.50 per exchange per calendar year, capped at 0.25% of total account value, with Core Selection products exempt and other exemptions varying by country schedule. Currency fluctuations can impact your returns.

Order types, routing and conflicts

Both firms publish an execution policy, and both disclose things worth reading before choosing. This section is drawn from those documents rather than from marketing pages.

Feature Scalable Capital DEGIRO
Order types Limit, Stop, Stop-Limit, Market, Take-Profit and Stop-Loss Eight order types including market, limit, stop loss, stop limit, trailing stop and value orders, plus combination and standard orders. The trailing stop is available on Xetra and Frankfurt only.
Market orders Sell side only — a buy order placed without a limit automatically receives a safety limit of at most 5% above the last ask Market (at best) orders available on both sides
Order validity The contract makes an order valid for the specified trading day and reserves the right to publish a longer period on the website; the published figure is 360 days for Limit, Stop and Stop-Limit, with market orders for the trading day only Day orders and good-till-cancelled only
OCO orders Explicitly not offered — Scalable states this in its own documentation Not among the eight listed order types
OTC execution The client contractually consents to execution outside trading venues, which includes dealing on own account and internal netting of buy and sell orders in the same instrument. Fund subscription and redemption is expressly exempt from best execution. Securities route to reference exchanges and alternative venues including systematic internalisers, OTFs and MTFs
Order aggregation Permitted — Scalable may combine client orders and states this can disadvantage an individual client through market impact or reduced allocation Day orders may route to multiple venues; good-till-cancelled orders sent via one broker’s smart order router go to the reference exchange only
Third-party brokers Scalable may appoint one or more intermediary brokers and discharges best execution by careful selection of them Direct to market under DEGIRO’s own membership, or via third-party brokers whose execution quality DEGIRO monitors and publishes
Displayed prices Scalable states expressly that price data in the client area are indicative and non-binding quotes, and that estimated order values and position valuations derived from them rest on those indicative quotes Not addressed in the documents read
Disclosed conflicts Scalable co-operates the European Investor Exchange with the Hannover Stock Exchange, and names revenue interest from acting as a liquidity provider at execution venues among its conflicts of interest. Its own execution policy states that its choice of venues reduces its costs. The client also contractually agrees that Scalable may keep inducements it receives, waiving the right to have them handed over. Execution-only, stated in DEGIRO’s own order execution policy. Under extraordinary conditions such as extreme volatility, speed of execution becomes the primary criterion and best execution may not always be met.
Demo account Not covered in the documents read Not offered — DEGIRO’s stated reason is that opening an account is free, so clients can familiarise themselves with the live platform

Sources: DEGIRO order execution policy and helpdesk; Scalable Capital client documents, section D Execution Policy and section C.IV Special Terms and Conditions: Broker (Stand Juli 2026). Verified September 2026.

The inducements clause is worth reading in full. Scalable’s contract states that the client agrees Scalable may collect and retain inducements, rebates and discounts, and that in deviation from German agency law the client has no claim to have them surrendered — the contract says so expressly, and notes that without that agreement Scalable would have to hand them over. Amounts may be determined across the client base and cannot always be attributed to a single transaction, and the client is informed of the actual amount once a year. Order-level inducement information is shown in the client area. Neither the amounts nor the counterparties are published by either firm.

How each broker handles uninvested cash

Scalable runs a separate Overnight savings account alongside the brokerage balance, and money does not move into it by itself. DEGIRO publishes no credit interest rate at all. The structural difference matters more than any headline rate.

Scalable Capital — Overnight savings account
2.60% p.a.
  • A separate savings account with its own IBAN, not the brokerage clearing balance — clearing balances are stated at 0% p.a.
  • You have to actively deposit into it to earn the rate. Cash left in the broker clearing account earns nothing
  • Same rate on both plans; no minimum investment; internal transfers from the broker clearing account occur in real time, external deposits only from the verified reference account
  • Variable rate — confirm the current figure on Scalable’s own site before relying on it
  • Cash is held in open omnibus trust accounts at trustee banks and/or in qualifying money market funds, with the distribution varying continuously and differing from client to client
  • Scalable’s fee page describes the practice by plan: on FREE, cash sits with Scalable, partner banks and qualifying money market funds; on PRIME+, with Scalable and partner banks. Either can be the sole safekeeping method
  • Trust credit balances of individual clients are not segregated from each other, though they are held separately from Scalable’s own funds
  • A safekeeping fee on credit balances is provided for in the contractual price list, with the rate published on Scalable’s website or apps
DEGIRO
No published rate
  • Cash is held with the bank alongside the investment account
  • DEGIRO’s published fee schedules do not state a credit interest rate on uninvested cash — check DEGIRO’s own current documentation rather than any third-party figure, including this one
  • No safekeeping or custody charge on cash appears on any DEGIRO schedule
  • Debit interest is published where you borrow: 6.25% p.a. on unallocated EUR and 4.75% p.a. on allocated EUR

These are different products rather than two versions of the same one, so treat this section as context rather than a like-for-like cost comparison. A yield on a separate savings account you have to fund yourself is not the same thing as interest on a brokerage balance, and the Scalable rate is variable and can be reduced. Currency fluctuations can impact your returns. Investing involves risk of loss. Entities, supervision and compensation schemes

Who you contract with, who supervises them, and what the compensation schemes do and do not cover. None of this protects the value of an investment.

Feature Scalable Capital DEGIRO
Legal entity Scalable Capital Bank GmbH, Seitzstrasse 8e, Munich, registered at Amtsgericht Munich HRB 217778 DEGIRO is the trading name of flatexDEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch, the Dutch branch of flatexDEGIRO Bank SE
Supervision Supervised by the German financial regulator (BaFin) and the Deutsche Bundesbank, operating cross-border under freedom of services without a physical branch Primarily supervised by the German financial regulator (BaFin); the Dutch Branch is registered with DNB and supervised by AFM and DNB
Deposit guarantee on cash German statutory scheme, €100,000 per depositor per bank German statutory scheme, €100,000 per client — not the Dutch scheme
Investor compensation 90% of losses, capped at €20,000 90% of losses, capped at €20,000
What these schemes cover Failure of the firm only. They do not cover investment losses. A banking licence does not imply that the value of your investments is protected.
Where cash actually sits Open omnibus trust accounts at trustee banks and/or qualifying money market funds. Trustee banks must be EEA credit institutions covered by a statutory guarantee scheme or comparable protection, and Scalable publishes an information sheet for each. Money market fund holdings sit under UCITS protection standards rather than the deposit guarantee, and unit values can fluctuate. Held with the bank alongside the investment account
Securities custody German securities in collective safe custody at Clearstream Banking AG, with the client acquiring co-ownership; foreign securities normally held in the home market or country of purchase Stichting DEGIRO holds securities for the client’s account
Service model Broker is execution-only; Wealth is discretionary portfolio management, is a separate product and is available to German and Austrian clients only Execution-only; no investment advice

Sources: DEGIRO helpdesk on investor protection, corroborated by the DNB public register entry for flatexDEGIRO Bank SE; Scalable Capital client documents, sections A, C and E (Stand Juli 2026). Verified September 2026.

Read the deposit guarantee limit carefully, because it is per institution. Balances are aggregated across everything you hold at the same credit institution. Scalable holds client cash at trustee banks and publishes an information sheet for each on its own website — so if you already bank with one of those institutions directly, your own balance and the balance held on your behalf count toward the same €100,000 ceiling, and the excess is not covered. Scalable’s contract also states that a client’s funds may be held with only one trustee bank or only one qualifying money market fund, which makes that overlap more likely rather than less. Neither scheme protects you against a fall in the value of your investments. Investing involves risk of loss. This is not investment advice.

What it costs to move on

Neither broker charges a headline exit fee, which is why this rarely appears in comparisons. The real friction is in different places on each side, and on one of them it is not a fee at all.

Scalable Capital
  • Securities transfer priced at €0.00 plus any third-party costs incurred, and the line is direction-neutral — it covers transfers in and out alike
  • No withdrawal, inactivity or account-closing charge appears anywhere in the contractual fee schedule
  • But the Broker can only be cancelled once every security has been sold or transferred to a securities account held elsewhere — you cannot close an account that still holds stock
  • If securities remain after the contract ends, Scalable may sell them after a one-month warning, and the client bears the expenses and costs of that sale
  • Until the account is fully settled, the client keeps paying the flat fee of their last active Broker model — €4.99 a month on PRIME+, continuing
  • An annual PRIME advance payment is refunded pro rata on a 365-day year, but only on written request
  • Whether an outgoing transfer can carry fractional holdings in kind is not stated anywhere — and fractions cannot be sold individually
DEGIRO
  • Account opening and closing are free, stated explicitly on the Dutch, French and Swiss schedules
  • No inactivity fee — stated explicitly on the French schedule and absent from the others
  • Incoming portfolio transfers free; bank transfers in and out free
  • Outgoing portfolio transfer €20.00 per position plus external costs on the Dutch, French, Irish and Swiss schedules — but the German schedule prices it at nothing
  • External costs are unpublished, vary per exchange, are passed on to the client, and are quoted by the service desk on request
  • Internal transfer between DEGIRO accounts €7.50 per position
  • No requirement to empty the account before closing it appears on any schedule

Sources: DEGIRO fee schedules for the Netherlands, Germany, France and Ireland, rates from 01-01-2026; Scalable Capital client documents, section E II and section C.IV clauses 12 and 14 (Stand Juli 2026). Verified September 2026.

The asymmetry is worth stating plainly. A multi-position DEGIRO account is expensive to transfer out of on most country schedules and free to transfer out of on the German one — check which schedule applies to you. A Scalable account is free to transfer out of everywhere, but cannot be closed while it still holds anything, and the plan fee keeps running until it is empty. Neither of those is a reason to choose or reject a broker on its own; both are worth knowing before you open the account rather than after.

Strengths and weaknesses at a glance

Scalable Capital
Pros
  • Savings plans from €1 with €0.00 charged per execution and per automatic reinvestment on both plans, on ETFs, shares, funds and crypto ETPs
  • Fractional investing inside savings plans, bought to six decimal places, which DEGIRO does not offer at all
  • One order price across Xetra and gettex on both plans, so what a trade costs does not depend on which plan you hold
  • Separate Overnight savings account at 2.60% p.a. (variable), same rate on both plans
  • Securities transfers priced at €0.00 in both directions, plus any third-party costs
  • No plan fee on FREE, and no venue or connectivity charge anywhere in the contractual schedule
Cons
  • €1.99 per individual order on both plans against DEGIRO’s €1.00 all-in, so Scalable is not price-competitive on manual orders at any trade frequency
  • The €4.99 PRIME+ fee buys no order-cost advantage at all, so no break-even point exists
  • The published order price is a contractual ceiling rather than a quote — the contract permits up to €1.99 and Scalable currently charges the ceiling
  • Three execution venues in total, against DEGIRO’s more than 45 markets, and the contract permits OTC execution the client consents to in advance
  • A currency markup exists but its size is not published anywhere, and the conversion may be carried out by a third-party custodian
  • A safekeeping fee on cash balances exists as a contractual line item with no rate located
  • Cash may sit entirely with one trustee bank or one money market fund, and client trust balances are not segregated from each other
  • The account cannot be closed until it is empty, and the plan fee keeps running until it is
  • Available in six countries only, and the managed Wealth product in two of them
DEGIRO
Pros
  • Over 1,000 Core Selection products at €1.00 all-in, priced the same on purchases and sales, and €0.99 below Scalable’s per-order price — currency or external product and spread costs may apply
  • More than 45 markets across 30 countries
  • A standing published price list per country, rather than pricing that depends on withdrawable special conditions
  • No platform fee and no inactivity fee — transaction, handling, currency, connectivity and external product and spread costs may apply
  • Core Selection products carry no connectivity fee, and the previous fair use policy on them has been waived
  • Published debit interest rates, a published connectivity fee and a published currency conversion rate, so those costs are quantifiable in advance
  • An annual statement for tax purposes is issued and available in the platform under Documents
Cons
  • No savings plan or recurring order type, so every repeat purchase is manual — the one thing Scalable does that DEGIRO cannot match
  • No fractional shares, so a fixed monthly amount cannot be fully invested
  • The €1.00 handling fee applies to every Core Selection trade, so small or frequent orders carry a high percentage cost — currency or external product and spread costs may apply
  • Multi-market access costs extra: €2.50 per exchange per calendar year, capped at 0.25% of total account value
  • Currency conversion costs 0.25% AutoFX, or €10.00 plus 0.25% for manual conversion, and currency movements can reduce returns

Who each broker actually fits

Scalable Capital — good fit if:
  • You want recurring purchases on a schedule, which are €0.00 per execution on both plans and which DEGIRO does not offer at all
  • You want fractional investing so a fixed monthly amount is fully invested rather than rounded down to whole shares
  • You buy almost entirely through savings plans and place very few orders by hand, because every hand-placed order costs €0.99 more than at DEGIRO
  • You want a separate savings account for cash, accept a variable rate, and are willing to move money into it yourself
  • Three German venues cover everything you want to buy
DEGIRO — good fit if:
  • You place your own orders, in which case DEGIRO is cheaper on every one of them and there is no frequency at which that changes
  • You want access to more than 45 markets across 30 countries
  • You trade in both directions and want the same price on a sale as on a purchase
  • You want the connectivity fee and currency conversion costs stated in advance so you can calculate them
  • You place larger, irregular amounts and have no use for a savings plan
  • Scalable is not available in your country of residence — it serves six
How to read this comparison

The cost question is settled and it is not close. From 1 September 2026 Scalable charges €1.99 for an individual order on both of its priced venues, on both plans. DEGIRO charges €1.00 all-in on over 1,000 Core Selection products, on purchases and sales alike, from a standing published schedule; currency or external product and spread costs may apply. There is no trade count, no plan and no venue at which Scalable comes out ahead on a manual order, which also means the €4.99 subscription has no break-even. What survives is not a price argument but a product one: Scalable runs savings plans from €1 at €0.00 per execution with fractional shares, and DEGIRO has no recurring order type and no fractionals, so the same monthly contribution is twelve manual orders and a cash remainder. If you buy on autopilot, that difference outweighs the per-order gap. If you place your own orders, it is worth nothing and DEGIRO is simply cheaper. Neither is better in the abstract, and the choice is yours to make. Investing involves risk of loss. This is not investment advice. Currency fluctuations can impact your returns. Frequently asked questions

Is Scalable Capital cheaper than DEGIRO for ETF investing?

Not on individual orders, and the answer changed on 1 September 2026. Scalable Capital’s fee schedule from that date prices every individual order at EUR 1.99 on Xetra and gettex, on the FREE plan and on PRIME+ alike. DEGIRO charges EUR 1.00 all-in on its Core Selection on Tradegate, which is EUR 0.00 commission plus the EUR 1.00 handling fee, on purchases and sales alike. Currency or external product and spread costs may apply. So DEGIRO is cheaper on every manual order, at every trade frequency, on either Scalable plan, and there is no order count at which that reverses. Where Scalable still competes on cost is recurring investing: savings plan executions and automatic reinvestments cost EUR 0.00 on both plans, from EUR 1, and DEGIRO offers no recurring order type at all. Crypto ETPs are the exception to that zero and carry a spread surcharge. Investing involves risk of loss. This is not investment advice. Figures verified September 2026.

Is Scalable Capital’s PRIME+ plan worth paying for against DEGIRO’s free account?

Not on order cost. From 1 September 2026 an individual order costs EUR 1.99 on Xetra and gettex on the FREE plan and on PRIME+ alike, so the EUR 4.99 monthly plan fee, billed monthly in advance, buys no order-cost advantage and no break-even point exists at any trade frequency. What PRIME+ does buy is a lower crypto ETP spread surcharge of 0.69 percent against 0.99 percent, the same reduction on Instant deposits, a different cash distribution arrangement and the feature set. Scalable’s binding client documents price a third plan, PRIME, at EUR 2.99 per month or EUR 35.88 per year billed annually in advance, and that plan appears neither on the fee page nor in the in-app plan switcher. No Scalable source states whether it can still be held or by whom, so treat it as a plan an existing customer may hold rather than one you can select when opening an account today. An annual PRIME advance payment is refunded pro rata on a 365-day year, but only on written request. DEGIRO charges no plan fee at all, though transaction, handling, currency, connectivity and external product and spread costs may apply. Figures verified September 2026 against the Scalable Capital client documents, section E, Stand Juli 2026.

Does DEGIRO have savings plans or fractional shares?

No to both, and both are sourced to DEGIRO’s own documents rather than inferred. DEGIRO’s order execution policy lists eight order types and two validity durations, and none of them is a scheduled or recurring purchase. DEGIRO’s helpdesk states that it facilitates whole shares only, so fractional shares are not offered. One DEGIRO order type is worth knowing about anyway: a value order lets you enter an amount rather than a share count for specific assets, though without fractionals the order still fills in whole units and the remainder stays as cash. Scalable Capital does offer Savings Plans, from EUR 1 per execution, at EUR 0.00 per savings plan execution and per automatic reinvestment on both plans, on ETFs, shares, funds and crypto ETPs, with fractional execution running on the European Investor Exchange. Crypto ETPs carry a spread surcharge on top of that zero. Fractions are bought to six decimal places and always rounded down, so the savings rate is never exceeded and small change stays in the clearing account. Scalable’s fractional rule is stricter than it first appears: fractions cannot be bought directly, they are acquired only through savings plans, and an individual fraction cannot be sold on its own. The entire position has to go. Product costs, spreads, fund surcharges and inducements may still apply. Investing involves risk of loss.

How are cash and securities held at Scalable Capital and DEGIRO?

Both sit under German protection schemes, which is the point most comparisons get wrong. DEGIRO is the trading name of flatexDEGIRO Bank Dutch Branch, the Dutch branch of flatexDEGIRO Bank SE. It is primarily supervised by the German financial regulator (BaFin), and the Dutch Branch is registered with DNB and supervised by AFM and DNB. Cash on a DEGIRO account is covered by the German deposit guarantee scheme up to EUR 100,000 per client, not the Dutch one, and the German investor compensation scheme covers 90 percent of losses on investments that cannot be returned, to a maximum of EUR 20,000 per client. Scalable Capital Bank GmbH is a credit institution supervised by BaFin and the Deutsche Bundesbank, and its cash is covered by the same German statutory deposit guarantee of EUR 100,000 per depositor per bank. The contract instructs Scalable to hold client cash in open omnibus trust accounts at trustee banks and/or in qualifying money market funds, and attaches no plan condition to that arrangement. Scalable’s fee page then describes which limb it applies in practice: on FREE, cash sits with Scalable, partner banks and qualifying money market funds; on PRIME+, with Scalable and partner banks. Either can be the sole safekeeping method, and Scalable states that a client’s funds may end up held with only one trustee bank or only one money market fund. Trust credit balances of individual clients are not segregated from each other. Money market fund holdings sit under UCITS protection standards rather than the deposit guarantee. These schemes cover the failure of the firm only. They do not cover investment losses, and no regulatory status protects the value of an investment. Investing involves risk of loss.

What does it cost to leave Scalable Capital or DEGIRO?

Neither charges a headline exit fee, and the real difference is structural. Scalable prices a securities transfer at EUR 0.00 plus any third-party costs incurred, and the line is direction-neutral, so it covers transfers in and out alike. But the Broker cannot be cancelled until every security in the account has been sold or transferred to a securities account held elsewhere. If securities remain after the contract ends, Scalable may sell them after a one month warning, the client bears the expenses and costs of that sale, and the client keeps paying the flat fee of their last active Broker model until the account is fully settled. For a PRIME+ customer that is EUR 4.99 a month, continuing. An annual PRIME advance payment is refunded pro rata on a 365-day year, but only on written request. DEGIRO prices account closing at nothing and charges EUR 20.00 per position plus external costs on an outgoing transfer on the Dutch, French, Irish and Swiss schedules, while the German schedule prices outgoing transfers at nothing. External costs are unpublished, vary per exchange, and are quoted by the service desk on request. Figures verified September 2026.
