Interactive Brokers vs Trade Republic (2026):
Savings plans, FX costs, and who wins by portfolio size
Trade Republic is built around free savings plans, a Visa debit card and a current account in one app. IBKR publishes its FX price, holds up to 29 currencies and reaches 170 markets. This comparison covers savings plan costs, FX routes, cash interest, protection and tax handling, checked against both brokers’ published terms in September 2026.

- You want fractional one-off buys from €1 and a simple mobile app.
- You want a Visa debit card and a current account next to your investments.
- You are a German tax resident: Trade Republic withholds German capital-income tax and lets you set a Freistellungsauftrag in the app.

Fees and savings plans: the biggest practical difference
For monthly ETF investing the two brokers price the same order very differently. Trade Republic charges nothing per savings plan execution; IBKR states its standard Fixed commission applies to every recurring purchase.
- EU ETF trade, whole shares: 0.05%, €3 minimum in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Spain; €0.75 per execution added on Euronext ETFs (Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels)
- Fractional orders and Recurring Investments: 0.05%, €1.25 minimum. IBKR states standard Fixed commissions apply to recurring purchases
- FX: manual conversion 0.20 bps at the entry tier, USD 2.00 minimum per order; automatic conversion about 0.03% (cash accounts, buy orders)
- Custody: none charged by IBKR; third parties may charge on some markets
- Withdrawals: two free requests per calendar month, then €1 per SEPA withdrawal or €8 per wire
- Securities transfer out: IBKR publishes no transfer-out fee for European positions; confirm the cost with IBKR
- One-off trade: commission free; €1 settlement fee with Best Price (default) or €2 with Direct Price. On partial fills the €1 is charged once per trading day. Spread and third-party costs may apply
- Savings plans: free per execution, €10 to €10,000 per execution; ETFs, stocks, ELTIFs, and crypto in 11 of the 18 countries. Bonds are not eligible
- FX on purchases: built into the price when Trade Republic executes as counterparty; no separate figure published
- FX on foreign dividends: a fixed margin on the interbank rate, for example 0.0014 for USD and 0.0011 for GBP
- Custody: free
- Securities transfer out: free; third-party costs may apply
Assumes an ETF that trades in euros (no currency conversion) and that IBKR offers in fractions, bought on IBKR’s Fixed plan.
| Monthly amount | Trade Republic savings plan | IBKR Recurring Investments |
|---|---|---|
| €100 | €0 | €1.25 (1.25%) |
| €300 | €0 | €1.25 (0.42%) |
| €600 | €0 | €1.25 (0.21%) |
| €1,000 | €0 | €1.25 (0.13%) |
| €2,000 | €0 | €1.25 (0.06%) |
Trade Republic has no explicit fee at any of these amounts, so there is no crossover in this table. IBKR’s €1.25 minimum applies up to €2,500 per purchase; above that the 0.05% rate takes over. At €300 a month, IBKR’s fee comes to €15 a year.
Explicit fees only. Neither column includes the price you trade at: Trade Republic pools savings plan orders with other customers’, places them at best, and settles everyone at one average price for the day; IBKR executes soon after market open on the scheduled date. For ETFs that trade in another currency, IBKR adds its FX cost and Trade Republic’s is built into the price and unpublished, so no like-for-like figure exists.

FX: a published price against a built-in one
IBKR publishes what it charges to convert currency, in two routes. Trade Republic builds conversion into the price it sets when it executes as counterparty and publishes no separate figure, so the two cannot be compared line by line.
- Manual conversion order: 0.20 bps at the entry tier, USD 2.00 minimum per order; IBKR states it uses a market order
- Automatic conversion: IBKR states it typically adds or subtracts 0.03% to the exchange rate, with no separate commission. It applies to buy orders in cash accounts; margin accounts convert first or borrow
- Multi-currency: hold up to 29 currencies (varies by entity) and convert when you choose
- Workflow: deposit EUR, convert in Client Portal, then buy
- Buying a non-EUR asset: conversion is part of the price Trade Republic sets as counterparty; no separate line and no published size
- Foreign dividends: converted to EUR with a fixed margin, for example 0.0014 for USD and 0.0011 for GBP; the rate used appears on the statement
- Card payments and ATM withdrawals abroad: no conversion fee
- Cash account in euros (złoty in Poland)
| Conversion | Manual order (0.20 bps, USD 2.00 min) | Automatic (about 0.03%) |
|---|---|---|
| USD 1,000 | USD 2.00 | USD 0.30 |
| USD 5,000 | USD 2.00 | USD 1.50 |
| USD 10,000 | USD 2.00 | USD 3.00 |
| USD 50,000 | USD 2.00 | USD 15.00 |
The two routes cost the same at about USD 6,667; below that the automatic route is cheaper, above it the manual order is. The manual order stays at the USD 2.00 minimum up to about USD 100,000. IBKR states automatic conversion applies to buy orders in cash accounts. Figures are in US dollars because IBKR sets the minimum in USD.

Cash interest: structure first, then the rates
IBKR pays nothing on the first €10,000 and scales its rate down for smaller accounts. Trade Republic sets its rate by country and pays only once interest is activated in the app.
| Feature | IBKR (Pro) | Trade Republic |
|---|---|---|
| Cash that earns nothing | The first €10,000 of EUR cash; below USD 100,000 net asset value the rate is reduced proportionally | Cash blocked by pending orders or card settlement; interest must be activated in the app |
| Rate basis | IBKR benchmark rate minus 0.5%, on settled cash | Set by country; shown in the app |
| Where the cash sits | Pooled client-money accounts at banks inside and outside the EEA | Trust accounts at partner banks; above your Partner Amount, qualified money market funds |
| Payment | Accrues daily, paid monthly | Paid monthly (German site) |

Platform and usability: a clear split by investor type
IBKR runs five platforms with depth to match. Trade Republic runs one app built around savings plans and a card, plus a web terminal for active investors.
- Client Portal: browser-based trading and account management, including funding and currency conversion
- IBKR Desktop: IBKR’s newest streamlined platform
- IBKR Mobile and IBKR GlobalTrader: IBKR Mobile on iOS and Android; GlobalTrader for simplified mobile trading
- Trader Workstation: IBKR’s professional trading platform
- Account settings include the pricing plan (Fixed or Tiered), trading permissions and base currency
- Mobile app, plus Web Terminal (launched 2 July 2026): charting, screeners, portfolio analytics and live data at no extra cost
- Savings plans: weekly, twice monthly, monthly or quarterly; executed on the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd of the month
- Visa debit card and current account: Saveback (advertised at 1%) paid into a savings plan, capped at €15 a month, if your bi-weekly or monthly savings plans total at least €50 a month
- Support: live chat or phone, in the app
Safety and investor protection
Both are regulated in the EU. The difference is how cash is protected: Trade Republic is a licensed bank that holds client cash at partner banks; IBKR states it is not a bank.
| Protection | IBKR (Interactive Brokers Ireland) | Trade Republic |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator | Central Bank of Ireland (C423427) | BaFin and Deutsche Bundesbank; licensed credit institution |
| Deposit guarantee on cash | None: IBKR states it is not a bank | Client cash in trust accounts at partner banks, each guaranteed up to €100,000 per depositor per bank. Money-market-fund portion not covered |
| Investor compensation | Irish Investor Compensation Scheme: 90% of the loss, up to €20,000, private individuals only, firm failure only (not market losses) | No figure in the documents we read |
| Securities custody | Some securities custodied at Interactive Brokers LLC, where SIPC applies to that extent | Held separately from Trade Republic’s own holdings; domestic securities at Clearstream Banking AG |
| Company scale | USD 22.3B equity capital (end of Q2 2026); S&P 500 member since August 2025; Nasdaq-listed (IBKR) | Over 10 million customers and over €150B in assets (company-reported, 2 July 2026) |

Tax handling: an advantage for German investors
IBKR states it does not provide tax advice and cannot assist clients with tax filings. Every account gets an Annual Statement. No IBKR page we have read says it withholds German tax at source.
Interactive Brokers Ireland offers PEA accounts to French, ISK accounts to Swedish and TBSZ accounts to Hungarian tax residents. Tools like Sharesight or Blockpit can help with record-keeping.
For German tax residents, Trade Republic withholds capital-income tax. A Freistellungsauftrag of up to €1,000 can be set in the app; tax already withheld is refunded only if the order is set within the same calendar year.
In Spain, clients moved to the Spanish branch (Spanish IBAN) come under Spanish IRPF taxation and reporting, per Trade Republic’s Spanish agreement. Trade Republic’s Portuguese agreement says it may provide local tax reporting, without obligation. Trade Republic’s German price list lists the annual tax certificate as free.
Who should use which, and when to use both
- You invest monthly in EUR-denominated UCITS ETFs: savings plans are free at every amount from €10 to €10,000, while IBKR charges at least €1.25 per purchase.
- You want fractional one-off buys from €1, a Visa debit card and a current account in one app.
- You are a German resident who wants tax withheld at source and a Freistellungsauftrag set in the app.
- You keep less than €10,000 in cash, on which IBKR pays nothing.
- You want support by live chat or phone in the app.
- You convert larger sums between currencies and want a published price: USD 2.00 per manual order up to about USD 100,000.
- You want to hold cash in several currencies and convert when you choose.
- You need markets beyond Trade Republic’s 30 exchanges: IBKR lists 170 markets in 40 countries.
- You want itemised costs on every order rather than FX built into the price.
- You want a PEA, ISK or TBSZ account and handle your own tax filing.
The two accounts can run side by side: Trade Republic savings plans into one or two EUR-denominated UCITS ETFs at no explicit fee, and IBKR for larger currency conversions at a published price, multi-currency holdings, or markets Trade Republic does not reach.
The overhead is a second app and a second set of annual tax documents.

Frequently asked questions
Is Interactive Brokers cheaper than Trade Republic for EU investors?
For monthly investing in EUR-denominated ETFs, Trade Republic is cheaper on explicit fees: savings plan executions are free, while IBKR states that standard Fixed commissions apply to Recurring Investments, which works out at 0.05% with a EUR 1.25 minimum on fractional orders. For one-off trades, Trade Republic charges a EUR 1 settlement fee (EUR 2 with Direct Price), and IBKR’s Fixed plan charges 0.05% with a EUR 3 minimum on whole-share orders in markets such as Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, plus EUR 0.75 per execution on Euronext ETFs. On currency conversion, IBKR publishes its price and Trade Republic does not: Trade Republic builds FX into the price when it executes as counterparty, so the two cannot be compared on a published figure.
Does IBKR have savings plans like Trade Republic?
IBKR has Recurring Investments: you set an amount, a start date and an interval, and the order executes soon after market open on the scheduled date using fractional shares. Only stocks and ETFs that IBKR offers in fractions are eligible, so check each ETF before you rely on it. IBKR states that standard Fixed commissions apply, which is 0.05% with a EUR 1.25 minimum on fractional orders. Trade Republic savings plans are free per execution, from EUR 10 to EUR 10,000, weekly, twice monthly, monthly or quarterly, for ETFs, stocks, ELTIFs, and crypto in the 11 countries where Trade Republic offers it.
What is the real FX cost difference between IBKR and Trade Republic?
IBKR offers two routes. A manual currency conversion order costs 0.20 basis points (0.002%) at the entry tier with a USD 2.00 minimum per order, so a conversion of up to about USD 100,000 costs USD 2.00. Automatic conversion, which IBKR states applies to buy orders in cash accounts, adds about 0.03% to the exchange rate, so the manual route is cheaper above roughly USD 6,667. Trade Republic states that currency conversion is part of the price it sets when it executes as counterparty and publishes no separate figure for it. For foreign dividends it publishes fixed margins, such as 0.0014 for USD. Because Trade Republic’s purchase FX is unpublished, there is no like-for-like figure to compare.
Which broker should a European beginner choose?
Trade Republic is simpler to start with: one app, free savings plans from EUR 10, fractional one-off buys from EUR 1, a Visa debit card and a current account. IBKR offers more markets, currencies and platforms, and more settings to learn before a first order. One path is to start with a Trade Republic savings plan into one broad UCITS ETF and add IBKR later if you need multi-currency accounts, larger currency conversions at a published price, or markets Trade Republic does not offer.
How does cash interest compare between IBKR and Trade Republic?
IBKR pays nothing on the first EUR 10,000 of EUR cash, and accounts with a net asset value below USD 100,000 receive a proportionally lower rate on the rest. Trade Republic sets its rate by country, pays monthly, and pays only once interest is activated in the app; cash blocked by pending orders or card settlement earns nothing. On the rates we read in September 2026, Trade Republic’s advertised rates in Germany and Spain were above IBKR’s EUR rate. The dated figures are in the cash interest section of this page; both rates change, so check each broker’s current rate.
Which broker has better investor protection, IBKR or Trade Republic?
They protect cash differently. Trade Republic holds client cash in trust accounts at partner banks, where each bank’s deposit guarantee covers up to EUR 100,000 per depositor per bank; cash above your Partner Amount is invested in money market funds, which deposit guarantees do not cover. IBKR states it is not a bank, so no deposit guarantee applies. Interactive Brokers Ireland, which serves all EU and EEA clients, is a member of the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme: 90% of the loss, up to EUR 20,000, for private individuals, and only if the firm fails. Trade Republic keeps client securities separate from its own holdings, with domestic securities held at Clearstream Banking AG.
Can I use both IBKR and Trade Republic at the same time?
Yes. One split is free Trade Republic savings plans for monthly contributions into EUR-denominated UCITS ETFs, and IBKR for larger currency conversions, multi-currency holdings or markets outside Trade Republic’s 30 exchanges. The cost is two apps and two sets of annual tax documents to handle.
When should I switch from Trade Republic to IBKR?
There is no fixed threshold. Signs it may be worth adding IBKR: you convert large sums between currencies and want a published price, you want to hold cash in several currencies, or you need markets or products Trade Republic does not offer. Trade Republic’s price list charges no fee for an outgoing securities transfer, though third parties may charge. IBKR states that fractional shares cannot be transferred in or out, so fractional positions have to be sold and moved as cash, and Trade Republic states that ELTIFs cannot be transferred either. Adding IBKR does not require closing Trade Republic.
